Dodgers season in review

With a new management team and a revamped roster, the Dodgers picked up 17      
wins from a year ago and finished in a tie for first place in the National      
League West in 2006. They endured remarkable streaks, good and bad, overcame    
countless injuries to some of their highest-paid players and were               
entertaining enough to break the franchise attendance record.

Many of the players who contributed the most are expected back in 2007,         
including a group of rookies that exceeded even the most optimistic             
expectations. That group includes catcher Russell Martin, left fielder Andre    
Ethier and relievers Takashi Saito and Jonathan Broxton.

After a first half hampered by nagging injuries, shortstop Rafael Furcal        
emerged as the team's apparent MVP, leading the offense in runs scored and      
total bases, while J.D. Drew made it through the season intact, leading the     
club with 100 RBIs and tying for the club lead with 20 home runs.

Defining moment: The regular season will be remembered for the Monday night     
miracle of Sept. 18, when four consecutive home runs in the bottom of the       
ninth sent the game into extra innings, and Nomar Garciaparra's walk-off        
blast turned an impending loss into an epic victory.

What went right: Stability was restored by the new management team of Ned       
Colletti and Grady Little. With the focus back on the field, a revamped         
roster overcame the injuries of several key figures early, then late            
acquisitions kept the club in the thick of the race.

What went wrong: Regardless of the outcome, the string of bad news on Eric      
Gagne became a hurdle that had to be cleared. Gagne's unavailability was        
compounded by Yhency Brazoban's elbow blowing out almost immediately after      
Gagne's loss, followed by Danys Baez's inability to close games. Combined       
with starting pitching that refused to pitch deep into games, it set in         
motion an endless triage just to finish each game.

Biggest surprise: The biggest surprise is that, after so many disappointments   
in recent years, there were so many pleasant surprises this year,               
particularly with rookies Saito, Martin and Ethier. Take your pick.             
Unexpected breakthroughs by Hong-Chih Kuo and Joe Beimel. Drew staying          
healthy an entire season.

Lineup: Colletti gave Jeff Kent an extension through 2007, which limits         
flexibility as much by position as dollars. If Kent's at second base, free      
agent Alfonso Soriano is a longshot. If Kent moves to first, what becomes of    
free agent Garciaparra? Will he move again to third base or left field?         
Furcal solved the leadoff problem, and Martin has become the new Paul Lo Duca   
behind the plate, but who plays center field? The ageless Lofton again? And     
will the door continue to revolve at third base, or is Wilson Betemit the       
answer? Or Garciaparra?

Rotation: If free agent Greg Maddux returns with Lowe and Brad Penny, the       
Dodgers start out with a pretty solid top three, even if none is a true ace.    
They can't really count on Mark Hendrickson or Brett Tomko, but they probably   
won't be giving up on them, either. And they'll be expecting Chad Billingsley   
to improve on a decent first season, with Kuo in the mix.

Bullpen: To Gagne or not to Gagne, that's the question of fans, but if you're   
the general manager, you can't count on someone who's had more operations       
than innings pitched over the past season and a half. Pretty much the same      
story with Brazoban. Tomko wants to be a closer, but he struggled late in       
setup. Saito got the job by default, but he keeps it because he's earned it.    
Mark Alexander can make the club as a setup rookie with a good winter and       
spring. And what becomes of Beimel?

home runs, it needs a home run hitter. Soriano wouldn't be a bad place to       
start, because he also would provide speed, although he also would crowd the    
infield, which is where he wants to play. What about A-Rod?

Prospect to watch: The obvious names are James Loney and Andy LaRoche. Loney    
dropped some jaws the way he played in September and October. LaRoche will      
need to show that his shoulder is sound and that his overall approach has       
matured from last Spring Training. There's also next year's Billingsley --      
left-hander Scott Elbert.                                                       
                                                                                
後起之秀:備受期待的有Loney和LaRoche.Loney在九,十月的表現跌破了一些球評眼鏡.     
LaRoche需要證明自己的肩膀是健康的而且整體的表現與今年春訓相比已經成熟.或許左投  
Elbert將成為明年球季的Billingsley.
