Dodgers to Offer Tracy Multiyear Deal

The Dodgers plan to offer a multiyear contract extension to Manager
Jim Tracy, General Manager Paul DePodesta said Wednesday.

"We haven't talked about a one-year scenario," DePodesta said. "One
year doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Then I'm just back in the same
spot next year."

DePodesta, hired on the eve of spring training and awarded a five-year
contract, inherited Tracy, whose contact expires this fall. DePodesta
deferred a decision on the manager's future at the time of his hiring
and throughout most of the season.

The Dodgers won the National League West this season, for the first
time since 1995. The club has posted a winning record in each of Tracy's
four seasons as manager.

DePodesta said he planned to offer extensions to Tracy and all of his
coaches, with the hope of concluding negotiations before the general
managers' meetings Nov. 9-12 in Key Biscayne, Fla.

In the meantime, DePodesta is reorganizing the front office he inherited.
Assistant general manager Kim Ng and scouting director Logan White will
return, he said, and a minor league director will be hired. That position
was vacant this season, after Bill Bavasi left last fall to become general
manager of the Seattle Mariners.

DePodesta said that four of the top advisors to former general manager
Dan Evans — John Boles, Jeff Schugel, Matt Slater and Mark Weidemaier
— have been granted permission to seek work with other clubs. Boles,
the former manager of the Florida Marlins, already has left the
organization and could join Bavasi in Seattle. The contracts of the
advisors expire this fall.
