The Los Angeles Dodgers and Cuban shortstop Erisbel Arruebarruena are close
to reaching an agreement, according to a source.

Arruebarruena will travel from Haiti to the United States this week to
undergo a physical, a mandatory requirement to complete the deal, the source
said.

Although he established his residence in Haiti, the player was assessed by
Major League organizations in the Dominican Republic.

Last week, Dodgers president Stan Kasten said the team would be adding a
player, but didn't name him, raising a wave of speculation in the media.

Arruebarruena, 25, was the starting shortstop for Cuba in the 2013 World
Baseball Classic before leaving the island last November.

Arruebarruena, who is a defensive artist, hit .320 in 306 plate appearances
with Cienfuegos in the 2011-2012 Cuban National Series, and .293 last season.
Most scouts believe he could be a Gold Glove winner, but is not expected to
be an offensive force in the major leagues.

With Cienfuegos, Arruebarruena was a teammate of Yasiel Puig, who signed with
the Dodgers in June 2012 for seven years and $42 million and finished second
in the NL Rookie of the Year voting in 2013. Arruebarruena was also teammates
with Jose Abreu, who signed with the Chicago White Sox last October with a
six-year, $68 million contract.

Besides Puig and Arruebarruena, the Dodgers will also have Cuban second
baseman Alexander Guerrero with the team in spring training. Guerrero signed
a four-year, $28 million contract last October in Dominican Republic.
