Los Angeles Dodgers 1-18) Chris Anderson, RHP, Jacksonville 2-56) Tom Windle, LHP, Minnesota 3-92) Brandon Dixon, 3B, Arizona 4-124) Cody Bellinger, 1B, Hamilton HS, Chandler John Sickels Chris Anderson, RHP, Jacksonville University: Strongly built at 6-4, 225, Anderson showed sharpened command this spring of a plus fastball/plus slider combination. His change-up has also improved, and he profiles as an inning-chewing mid-rotation starting pitcher with the ability to dominate at times. He pitched quite well for a weak 17-37 college team, posting a 2.49 ERA with a 101/27 K/BB in 105 innings and allowing 90 hits. The Dodgers have favored big, hard-throwing right-handers over the years, mainly from the high school ranks, but Anderson's combination of upside and signability makes him a good fit here. Tom Windle, LHP, University of Minnesota: Low-90s fastball, very good slider, and an improving changeup enabled Windle to thrive this spring with a 2.05 ERA and an 81/27 K/BB in 88 innings. Some see him as a reliever but I think he has a chance to start. Curiously conservative for a Dodgers draft, so perhaps all the money spent on the free agent and international market has pulled things back a bit financially. That's not to say there isn't talent here. Anderson is a big hard-throwing horse in the Dodgers mold, Windle is a potential fifth starter or relief option who could advance quickly. Dixon looks like a solid role player but hard to profile as a regular due to lack of power. Community college pitchers Underwood and Rhame should be signable in these spots; Rhame has the stronger arm, Underwood the greater pitchability. The Dodgers liking for bloodlines shows up in the 12th round with the selection of Adam Law (son of Vance, grandson of Vernon) out of BYU. He's a future utilityman. Jonathan Mayo (MLB.com) fastball touches 97 mph, may have boosted his stock more than any arm in this year's college class. Law notes that he faded down the stretch, perhaps due to over-usage, but has the potential for two plus pitches. Anderson is the second college pitcher selected by the Dodgers in the past three drafts, as they also selected Stanford left-hander Chris Reed back in 2011 with the No. 16 overall pick. Both Anderson and second-round pick Tom Windle are Minnesota natives. Windle, a left-hander who attended the University of Minnesota, agreed to terms with Los Angeles last week. Anderson's deal means that there are now seven first-round picks who have signed just six days after the draft.
