"Love the Earth, Love Taiwan!"

[Editor's note: This prose poem was written down by
Chiayi writer Dan Bloom after listening to an elderly
man in the Alishan region of Chiayi County talking
about the need for Taiwanese to protect the
environment everywhere around the island, from the
seashore areas to the mountain areas. If anyone would
like to use these words to help promote "green
activities" to protect the environment, they may do,
and they may also translate the entire poem in
Chinese, Taiwanese or Hakkanese, too. Contact the

If there's a reason to protect the Earth
-- and there is! --
and if we take this reason
and multiply it by millions
billions
then what we have, in the final analysis
is a world were sustainability
and protection of environment
are of paramount importance
--------------------
and all of us
young and old
rich and poor
in every country on this Planet
and in every city and town in Taiwan
must work hard to keep a balance
---------------------------
to keep the world from becoming overpolluted
overcrowded
overworked
overfarmed
overused
-------------------------------
so that those generations that follow us,
and surely there will be many generations after us,
will have a beautiful and lovely Earth to inhabit.

Sustainablity is the name of the game
and protection of the environment means
more of the same
and we can do it
you can do it
we, us, I, you, they, them, he, she
but most importantly "we"
can do it
will do it
must do it
---------------------------
for if the Earth is to survive
and if humans and animals and plants and wildlife
and the oceans
and the rivers
and the lakes
and the mountains
and the icebergs!
are to survive -- and survive it all must! --

then it it up to each and every one of us
here! in taiwan and elswhere!
to do out utmost
to protect and preserve the environment
to recycle and follow the laws of sustainability
----------------------
acting locally, thinking globally
---------------------------------
in Hualien, Taitung, Kaohsiung and Taipei
and in Chiayi, Tainan, Hsichu and Keelung
in every town and village on this treasure island
--------------------------
listen to wind
hear the waves pounding the beach in Kenting
climb to the summit of Mt. Jade
cherish the seasons and the cycles of nature
-------------------------------
and help turn Taiwan into
a truly Green Island

where sustainablity is not just a word
but a vision, too!
And more than a vision.....

如果有一個保護地球的理由
理由就在這裡
如果我們把這個理由乘以
百萬倍
千萬倍
那麼我們得到一個結果
就是擁有一個不被污染的世界
並做好環保
是多麼的重要
我們全體
老的少的
有錢的 沒錢的
在地球上的每個國家
和在台灣內的大大小小的城鎮裡
都必須盡力地保持環境上的平衡
避免過度污染這個世界
不必要的擁擠
避免工作過頭
濫墾濫伐
使用過度
使得我們的下一代
和千千萬萬後代的子孫
能夠居住在一個美麗並且可愛的地球上
不污染這個地球是這個遊戲的名稱
而環境保護的意義遠超過一切
我們絕對可以辦得到
你也可以做得到
我們...
我...你...他們...他和她,
但最重要的是
我們能夠做到
將放手一博
必須去實行
為了能夠讓地球生存下來
和所有的人類
動物 和植物
並大自然
包括海洋
河流
湖泊
高山
和冰雪
都能夠生存下來
--全都必須生存下來
必須靠我們每一個人
來!
...不管在台灣或任何其他地方
盡我們全部的力量
去保護和保持我們的的環境
>做好回收的工作並遵守環保規章
從地方上著手,
放眼世界
在花蓮, 在台東,
高雄, and 和台北,
在嘉義, 台南,
新竹, and 和基隆,
在這塊寶島上的城鎮
鄉村
聽風的聲音
聽海浪拍打在墾丁的海岸
珍惜大自然的四季交替循環
幫助台灣成為
一個真正的綠色島嶼
在這裡
環境保護並不只是個口號
但也是一種光景
遠多於一種現象
是一個可以遵循的真理!
