A bullpen closer does his job quickly.
But for new Colorado closer Chin-hui Tsao, getting a read on the job -- and
for others, getting a read on him -- is going to take time.

Tsao received and blew his first save opportunity on Wednesday, giving up two
runs on three hits in the eighth to let San Francisco tie the game. After the
Rockies lost, 7-5, Tsao said, "I feel a little tight in the shoulder."

Asked if he was worried, given that labrum problems helped lead the Rockies to
move their longtime prospect to the closer role, Tsao said, "A little bit."

But think of Tsao's statement as a massage of the English language. Tsao, 23,
grew up in Taiwan speaking Mandarin Chinese, and sometimes it takes a bit for
him to work out the kinks as he expresses the thoughts. Take a little time
with Tsao and it's obvious that there isn't a problem with the shoulder as
much as a need to learn a new role.

The reason the Rockies moved Tsao's two most-recent save chances to later in
games was to help him learn to prepare to enter games. In his first late-game
appearance, on Saturday against Oakland, he survived a ninth-inning, leadoff
double, kept the inning scoreless and wound up with the victory. Tsao smiled
and nodded when asked if the real issue is when he warms up and at what pace.

"Maybe I can go more early, take more time," Tsao said. "Sometimes quicker.
Sometimes I take time."

After the game, Rockies manager Clint Hurdle was happy overall with Tsao. All
of the hits were on the ground. The Rockies wanted the hard-throwing Tsao to
work on secondary pitches, and Hurdle said he threw "some filthy changeups."
Hurdle said Tsao could have put away hitters better, but he saw the outing as
a positive.

After hearing that Tsao is not just accepting that tightness is a problem but
trying to figure out how to ply his new craft, Hurdle was even happier with
Tsao.

"That's something we've talked about, trying different methods to get him
loose and ready to go," Hurdle said. "It's all part of it. If he sees this as
a learning experience, then that is positive."

The Rockies have been happy with Tsao's fastball velocity this spring,
especially the fact that it is consistent. They want him to use the changeup
and a slider that was arguably his best pitch before he underwent Tommy John
ligament transfer surgery in 2001. But with the shoulder tight on Wednesday,
Tsao said he threw just one slider.

落雞們之所以在最近的兩場比賽都於後半段才安排上場, 是為了讓他習慣這樣的上場模
式. 在他第一次後半場出賽時, 是週六對上喔客藍. 他在第九局先送出了隻二壘安打,
之後成功避免失分, 驚險取得勝利. 當曹被問及問題是否在於他熱身的速度, 以及在場
上的節奏時, 曹笑點頭回答說 "也許我可以再加快點節奏, 再看看吧. 我有時會快一些
, 有時則喜歡慢慢來"

賽後落雞們總理客林特賀兒多對曹的表現仍感到快慰. 安打全是往地上打的. 落雞們希望
習慣直來直往的曹能夠多使用些其他球種. 賀兒多說曹的變速球有時挺邪惡的. 他任為曹
其實能夠更漂亮的解決打者們, 不過他仍然對曹在比賽中解決打者做出正面的回應.

落雞們對曹今年春訓的球速也感到高興, 特別是他能保持這樣的速度. 然而他們也希望
曹能夠多利用他的變速球和滑球, 至少在他 2001 年接受湯米醬韌帶移殖前, 這些球種
都是他的拿手變化球. 曹在週三的比賽中很可惜的因為肩膀沒能熱開的關係, 只投了一
顆滑球.
