Rockies beat Giants to snap slide
Tsao finishes up as eight-game skid comes to an end

DENVER -- To the Colorado Rockies player who mattered the most Saturday
night,it was routine.
New closer Chin-hui Tsao insisted, "If I was not focused, maybe I would
be like..." before patting his chest rapidly to drive home what he meant.
There was no pitter-patter at the start of the ninth inning, nor after
MichaelTucker's homer reduced the lead over San Francisco from two runs
to one, or even after Omar Vizquel's double brought the go-ahead run to
the plate.
When Tsao ended the Rockies' 5-4 victory by getting Ray Durham to fly out
to center field, he shook hands with teammates as if he'd been doing it
forever.Of course, it was his first save opportunity this season, the
second save in three chances in his Major League career, and only the
third save of his life counting one in last year's Olympics for his
native Taiwan.
Tsao, 23, a prospect in the Rockies chain for years as a starter before
he was converted, treated it as such a common occurrence that until about
50 minutes after the last pitch, he was in the trainer's room in the
basement of Coors Field, calmly going through a workout with exercise
bands that he did after each appearance in the lazy days of Spring
Training.
But pardon the 23,439 in the stands for alternately going into palpita
-tions and arrest before finally celebrating the Rockies' first victory
since Opening Day, eight losses ago. In person, on TV and radio, and by
computer, fans had suffered through four blown saves and a bullpen ERA
of 9.14 through the first nine games.
Manager Clint Hurdle certainly didn't mind the anxious moments.
"He had three runs to play with and we walked away and shook hands
afterward," Hurdle said. "So I'm happy with the way it finished up."
As was the case in most of the games, the Rockies did a lot right, only
this time they did just enough.
Colorado had nine hits in five innings against Giants ace Jason Schmidt
(2-1), surprising him along the way.
The Rockies had four of their five steals with him on the mound, and
scored a third-inning run on a first-and-third bunt by Clint Barmes --
who went 2-for-2, was hit twice, and is 6-for-7 in the two games at
Coors between the clubs. Preston Wilson had two hits, the first for
the first hit by a right-handed hitter against Schmidt this season,
the second for two runs in the third.
Joe Kennedy (1-1), insisting to catcher JD Closser that he wanted to
go fastball or bust, held the Giants to two runs on seven scattered
hits in 6 2/3 innings. Kennedy also had payback for Schmidt's two-hit
performance against the Rockies in an 11-4 victory last Sunday with
two hits of his own.
Matt Holliday's RBI single with two out in the sixth off Jerome
Williams added an important run, and the bullpen was an effective
bridge to Tsao. After Jason Ellison's seventh-inning double put
runners at second and third, Bobby Seay replaced Kennedy (1-1) and
struck out Vizquel. Brian Fuentes overcame Durham's leadoff double
in a scoreless eighth.
But with a club that hasn't had anything close to bullpen stability
since Jose Jimenez earned 41 saves in 2002, any game in the hands
of relievers increases the heart rate.
"We're going to have that nervousness," Kennedy said. "I'm sure the
team does. I'm sure the bullpen does. It's one of those things where
if you play baseball, you've got to prove that you can do it. They've
had a rough beginning, just like I and some of the other guys did."
But even as the inning began to look like so many other awful endings,
the Rockies began to feel different behind Tsao.
He threw strikes on half of his 26 pitches although fans thought some
others, most notably a two-strike pitch to Vizquel before the double,
should have been called that way. Even Tsao believes the radar gun
that flashed 99 mph on one pitch was a little exaggerated, but
nonetheless he threw hard.
Tsao also was accurate enough to avoid walks -- a late-game bugaboo
around here for years.
"We're out there to win games," first baseman Todd Helton said.
"We're not going out there thinking we might lose a game. Tsao was
throwing the ball real well. He was going after guys. He wasn't
walking anybody. I felt really good with him on the mound."
Wilson said, "When he had to, he threw strikes. I like it."
With one out in the ninth, Mike Matheny hit a drive to right that
Luis Gonzalez got a glove on but couldn't handle, and Matheny wound
up with a double, then Tucker homered. Tsao got Jason Ellison to pop
up.
Vizquel's solid double to right earned a visit from pitching coach
Bob Apodaca, who said he wanted to guard against "rapid respiration."
Tsao, who missed the first seven games with a sore rotator cuff and
had his first appearance in a mop-up role in Arizona on Wednesday,
insisted his vitals were fine. Before long, Colorado had its first
save since Tsao earned his first save, last Sept. 29 at Los Angeles.
"I was not nervous -- I had to wait two days, it was a long time,"
said Tsao, who said he drew strength from the crowd noise at the
start of the inning but blocked it out afterward. "I just wanted
to save the team, focus every pitch."
Tsao did it, just like he has less than a handful of times in his
life.

不一樣，因為是曹在投。
