Ringolsby: No relief from bullpen fears, but youth brings hope
April 4, 2005
Six weeks in the desert sun and what the Colorado Rockies found out is . . .
‧ There was no closure to late-inning relief questions
What was the biggest question for the Rockies when spring training opened is
the biggest question as the regular season opened.
They had hopes.
Eleven days ago, the Rockies proclaimed the job belonged to Chin-hui Tsao, the
favorite heading into spring training. He hasn't pitched since. Right rotator
cuff inflammation has forced him to open the season on the disabled list.
Five days ago, the Rockies acquired former Arizona closer Byung-Hyun Kim from
Boston. On Thursday, pitching coach Bob Apodaca held out hope that Kim could be
ready for ninth-inning chores today.
It wasn't to be.
Instead, manager Clint Hurdle will mix and match his way through the late
innings, looking at the alignment of opposing lineups, and figure out how to
use left-handers Brian Fuentes and Javier Lopez, along with right-handers Ryan
Speier and Scott Dohmann.
