DENVER -- As the Colorado Rockies feared, right-handed closer Chin-hui
Tsao has a possible labral tear in his right shoulder.
The injury, first diagnosed by Rockies medical director Dr. Thomas J.
Noonan and confirmed on Wednesday in Los Angeles by Angels medical director
and noted pitching arm expert Dr. Lewis Yocum, most likely will require
surgery.
The Rockies announced that Tsao is scheduled to meet again with Noonan on
Thursday before deciding what happens next.
An operation would be Tsao's second major medical procedure since signing out
of Taiwan as an amateur for a $2.2 million bonus in October 1999. He underwent
Tommy John elbow ligament surgery in 2001 while in the Minors.
That injury and last season's bouts with shoulder problems, plus a minor issue
with finger blisters, led the Rockies to convert Tsao -- their brightest
prospect for much of his time in the organization -- to closer. He was 1-0 with
a 6.55 ERA before Friday, when he was placed on the disabled list for the
second time this season.
Colorado general manager Dan O'Dowd said that whenever Tsao becomes healthy,
he will return to the closer role, which for now is being handled by left-hander
Brian Fuentes.
"We felt pretty good that Tsao was the type of guy that was going to succeed,"
O'Dowd said. "He has a power fastball. For the most part, he threw strikes,
albeit he needed to throw more quality strikes. He had a nice changeup, and
was the type of guy who would work here.
"It's the kind of role he's very comfortable in."
