DENVER -- Right-handed pitcher Chin-hui Tsao is considered one of the lights
of the Colorado Rockies' future. But Tsao is currently a shining presence in
his home country during the Taiwan Lantern Festival, an event that dates some
2,000 years to the Han Dynasty.
The event, also known as the Yuan Hsiao Festival, is an 11-day event that
kicked off on Feb. 5. According to The China Post, Yuan Hsiao is a sweet
glutinous rice ball that symbolizes family and happiness. To celebrate those
feelings, Chiang Kai-Shek (CKS) Memorial Hall Plaza in Taipei and the
surrounding streets will be decorated with large-scale lanterns featuring
landmark architecture, Chinese zodiac animal and religious symbols, plus
special designs from other countries.
The centerpiece is a 25-ton monkey with outstretched arms, atop a
Taiwan-shaped cloud and a globe. This is the Chinese Year of the Monkey.
And one of the large-scale lanterns is dedicated to Tsao, who to Americans is
a 22-year-old prospect who may begin the season in Triple-A but is much
bigger in his homeland. The lantern has Tsao in a Colorado uniform. Another
lantern depicts a batter in a blue jersey and white shoes, colors worn by the
country's national team.
Tsao became the first Taiwanese pitcher to appear in a big-league game when
he started against the Milwaukee Brewers and earned a 7-3 victory on July 25
at Coors Field.
Jun-Liang Wu, 28, an assistant engineer for an electrical engineering company
by day but by night a self-described "insane baseball fan" who reports on
prospects and International Baseball Federation games for Web sites in Taiwan,
said he has never seen Tsao in person but follows him closely on television,
in print and on the Web. Wu proudly took the picture with this article.
"I share it with everyone," Wu said in an e-mail.
Pride in Taiwanese baseball is an important part of this year's festivals in
the country.
On Jan. 29, members of the Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) National Team attended a
ceremony at the Pinghsi Sky Lantern event -- which featured floating lanterns
-- to seek blessings for upcoming games. Taiwan qualified for the Athens
Olympics. Tsao could be part of that team if he is in the minors at that time.
Whether he represents Taiwan or is with the Rockies, Tsao will continue to
serve as a beacon for his country.
He just happens to be doing so literally at this point.

Tsao shines brightly in Taipei

右投手曹錦輝被視為落磯隊未來的希望，但是他在他家鄉的台灣燈會
中，成為全場矚目的焦點，這個燈會的傳統可以追溯到兩千多年前的
漢朝。
這個活動也稱為元宵節，這是一個從二月五日起連續十一天的節慶，
根據中國英文郵報的資料，元宵是一種黏黏的甜米球，代表家庭和快
樂。為了慶祝這些感覺，中正紀念堂和其週邊的街道會架起大型的花
燈，這些花燈的主題通常是台灣的地標、十二生肖和宗教象徵，另外
也有來自其他國家的不同花燈。
在正中央是一個重達二十五公噸的猴子花燈，這隻猴子作著兩手張開
的姿勢，腳踏著台灣形狀的雲以及地球，今年是中國的猴年。
其中一個大型花燈是以曹錦輝為主題，他對美國人來說是一個二十二
歲，今年應該會從3A出發的新秀，但他對他的母國來說更為重要，以
曹錦輝為造型的花燈穿著落磯隊的球衣。另外一個花燈則是穿著藍上
衣白長褲，這是台灣國家隊球衣的顏色。
曹錦輝在七月25日成為第一名登上大聯盟的台灣投手，他當時先發迎
戰釀酒人隊，並在主場取得七比三的勝利。
二十八歲的Jun-Liang 吳平日是一個電機公司的助理工程師，但是到
了晚上，他搖身一變成為瘋狂棒球迷，他為台灣的許多網站報導小聯
盟新秀和國際棒球賽事，他表示他從來沒見過曹錦輝本人，但是他非
常關注任何在電視上、報紙上和網路上有關曹錦輝的報導。吳很驕傲
的拍下了這張照片。
「我和把這照片和每個人分享」吳在一封電子郵件上說。
今年燈會的其中一個主題，就是台灣棒球的驕傲。
一月二十九日，中華台北國家隊的成員參加平溪天燈節，祈求以後的
賽事也能順利，台灣棒球隊將會參加雅典奧運，假如曹錦輝當時仍在
小聯盟的話，他可能也會參加。
不論他屆時代表的是台灣還是落磯隊，他仍然會是他的國家所有的棒
球員努力追隨的目標。
他在這點上，可說表現得無可挑剔。
