Notes: Tsao solid in debut
Hurdle gives pitcher high marks in year's first outing

Chin-hui Tsao was so impressive in his 2004 debut Monday that teammates came
bearing gifts Tuesday. Closer Shawn Chacon dropped hot wings off at Tsao's
cubicle for a pregame snack.
"I heard you liked them," said Chacon, when Tsao came over to say thanks.

Tsao pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning in the Rockies' 9-2 victory after being
activated earlier in the day, getting two tame grounders before blowing a
mid-90s fastball in for a called third strike against D-Backs top rookie
Chad Tracy.

"He looked good for a first outing," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle. "He threw
four different pitches -- a four-seamer, a two-seamer, a slider and a sinker.
He threw one changeup, also. A good step forward."

Tsao threw one 88-mph slider in addition to his fastball, and Hurdle said he
wants to make sure Tsao gets a good look out of the bullpen in the final three
weeks.

The tentative plan is give Tsao an inning of work Wednesday, give him another
day off and then try to pitch him in back-to-back games "if the situations
present themselves," Hurdle said. "We need to pitch him like everybody else.
This kid's had a governor on him almost since he's been in the organization."

Chacon, who has 34 saves in his first full season as closer, said he believes
Tsao has the stuff and the temperment to handle a late-inning role.

"I've seen him pitch for a couple years now. He has a lot of stuff and he
throws strikes," Chacon said.

"Mentality-wise, he doesn't let much of anything bother him."
