Rockies need rookie to save series
Colorado (61-65) at New York (53-69), 1:10 p.m. ET
By Thomas Harding / MLB.com
The Colorado Rockies will start their longest homestand of the season,
nine games, on Tuesday.
The bad news? They have to play on Monday afternoon first. The Rockies,
already 1-5 on what could have been a season-defining road trip, are
playing the finale of a four-game set at Shea Stadium, trying to prevent
from being swept at the hands of the New York Mets.
When the Rockies called up right-hander Chin-hui Tsao from Double-A Tulsa
in late July, they wanted to see how he'd react to important assignments.
Trying to pitch the team into National League Wild Card contention was
what Colorado had in mind.
This was not.
Nonetheless, this is what Tsao and the Rockies face.
"Hopefully, we'll get a good starting effort from him," said manager Clint
Hurdle. "Hopefully, he'll pitch into the sixth or seventh inning and give
our team a chance to win a ballgame."
Pitching matchup:
COL: RHP Chin-hui Tsao
‧2-0, 4.50 ERA
‧Has never faced the Mets
NYM: RHP Steve Trachsel
‧11-7, 4.46 ERA
‧1-0, 4.00 vs. Rockies in 2003
‧7-6, 4.90 lifetime vs. Rockies
Player to watch:
Rockies right fielder Larry Walker will most likely be back in the lineup
on Monday. He is batting .406 with three homers, five RBIs and eight walks
against Trachsel.
Quotable: "Unfortunately, when you've got one or two spokes out of the
wheel, the wheel don't roll right." -- Hurdle after Sunday afternoon's
6-4 loss to the Mets
