Chin-Hui Tsao was the Colorado Rockies' first signing from Asia when he signed
in October 1999. He was rated the organization's top prospect by Baseball
America in 2001 and '02 and at No. 2 prior to this season.
He supported that ranking by going 11-4 with a 2.46 ERA at Double-A Tulsa, and
led the Texas League with 125 strikeouts at the time of his callup to Colorado.
He pitched in both the All-Star Futures Game and the Texas League All-Star Game
in July. He bypassed Triple-A when he was promoted to the big leagues on July
25, becoming the first Taiwanese pitcher to appear in the Majors (outfielder
Chin-Feng Chen appeared in one game with the Dodgers last September). MLB.com
caught up with him during a recent road trip to New York.
★Q1:
MLB.com: You pitched one scoreless inning in this year's Futures Game in
Chicago. How was the experience different from the Futures Game in
Atlanta in 2000?
Chin Hui-Tsao: It was a lot different. Back then, I was a young player (only
19) at the time and did not get to play. I looked up at some of
the older players. This time, I was one of the older players and
enjoyed the experience more.
★Q2:
MLB.com: Where were you when you found out you were called up to the Majors?
Tsao: I was actually sleeping. I think it was July 22 and Bill Geivett (Rockies
director of player personnel and development) left a voicemail on my
cellphone. Right after I heard the message, I started to get phone calls
from my friends and my parents, who all knew already, and they live in
Taiwan!
★Q3:
MLB.com: On July 25, when you made your first career Major League start in
Denver, many Taiwanese fans came out to support you. Did you notice
them?
Tsao: Of course. I saw them waving the Taiwan flag and cheering. I heard there
were more than 200 of them. I was glad to get the win in my first start.
