Common sense.
Common sense suggests that you should not take racism as a joke
before you really know the person; you should not joke on someone
else's expense; and of course, certain sensitivity is requried of
us towards subjects like religion -- people tend to over-react when
God's in the picture.
And last but not least: common sense suggests that just because
you can't take things seriously, doesn't mean other people won't.
