A simple way to make sure that you (I don't mean "you" you)
don't make such a mistake is to know the difference
between "pet" and "pat".
The position of your tongue is higher when you
pronounce /pet/, slightly open your mouth.
For /pat/, the position of your tongue is lower, as well as your
lower jaw.
A bit exaggeration (or not?), of course.
