[問題] further vs. farther

我想請問一下

farther and further同樣在中文都有「更遠」的意思

不知道它們兩個的用法有什麼不同呢？

我做到的一個Toeic文法問題如下：

        Using the latest fuel cell technology, hybrid cars can travel _____
and faster than ever before.
        (A) further (B)bigger (C)quicker (D)farther

正解寫(D) farther，但我不懂為什麼不可以選A。

其實翻閱字典,
farther跟further的解釋很難區分,
1.farther我想就距離上的"更遠"來講沒問題.

2.重點是further當形容詞用時,也有"at a greater distance"的意思,
"It was much further to the town centre than I remembered."
"Fourteen miles is further than you'd think once you start to run it."
不過看看字典的例句,further是指"程度上,等級上的更深更遠",
如"further discussion","further information",
所以further是指感受的抽象的更深更遠更detail,
而非指像這題的"可跑距離更遠"的實際的描述.
