基本上二者都可以用，不用客氣，但除了以下幾種特定的用法：
1)專指「在戶外」時就要用in the street . e.g. It is dangerous to be
in the street after dark . 醉臥街頭時, 當流浪兒等當然是在戶外，
所以也是用in，而交通工具也是在戶外走，所以也是用in。
2)當做在能力上「難以相比」時，也是用in，如in the same street . e.g.
Her clothes are not in the same street as yours .
3)當指妓女在街上討生活時，就要用 on the street .
4)專指街的地面時，就要用on，如丟紙屑，還有走在街面上時也用on。
5)廣為人知時，也是用on，e.g. Sue put it on the street, and now
everyone knows .
6)專指華爾街日報時，就要用on，e.g. I heard on the Street today that
bank stocks are headed up.
7)指打折後的最低價，也是用on，e.g. It lists at $2200 and can be got
for about $1600 on the street .
