可數名詞用在統稱的時候通常會用a/an或複數，如：
1. A fiction is a story about imaginary characters and events.
2. Books are made of paper.
不過用在以下類別的名詞時常會用the
3. The lion is the king of beasts. （動物種類）
4. Who invented the television. （發明物）
如果是不可數名詞，什麼都不用加：
5. Fish can't live without water.
這裡的fish是當總稱（魚類）所以當不可數名詞。
6. Man can't live without air.
這個man在此是指human race所以當不可數名詞。
