[文法] although 跟in spite of

[perle (5566去死!!!!!)]

剛剛在寫多益文法練習的時候寫到這一句
"____the weather was horrendous and the food scarce,
the team of adventurers succeeded in reaching the top of Mount Everest "
有四個選項,其中有although 跟 in spite of
答案是although,請問一下為什麼不能用in spite of??
習題講解裡只有提到althgouh是連接詞這個答案
可是although,in spite of都有"雖然,儘管"的意思
還是說因為句子後面有and這個連接詞所以前面只能接although??
