Hi guys! I'm just wondering, which English accent do you prefer? American or British one? I prefer the British accent. I think it sounds more elegant. In fact sometimes I can't pronounce the "little" of American accent... Unfortunately my accent is kind of a mixture of both...@@ What do you think? OK, I think I better reply properly rather than 推 too many lines. Well, with the British accent, there is nothing wrong with it by itself, but perhaps teh historical perspective, how they used to have a 'upper class' accent which they considereed superior to the 'working class' accent. Don't know all the details, but there were even movies about it! Anyway, I thought that was a bit of a nonsense to be honest. I can't say that I like the American accent in particular though, but I do admit that you get used to it because of all the TV programs, American accent just sounds like the 'right' accent. At the end of the day, I don't really care that much, as long as I can understand it! -- The only thing worse than being rejected is being forgotten. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 210.246.0.54 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- < 作者: singlo (來book版翻翻書吧) 看板: EngTalk 標題: Re: [Talk] Which accent? 時間: Wed Oct 6 12:40:09 2004 I prefer English accent, just because I can't understand British accent. ^^" ※ 引述《Jman208 (尼國來的小豪)》之銘言: : ※ 引述《etudiante (j'suis etudiante)》之銘言: : : Hi guys! : : I'm just wondering, which English accent do you prefer? : : American or British one? : : I prefer the British accent. For me, it's not just a question of stereotype. I heard both accents quite often and compared them. The main reason why I think British accent is more elegant, is that normally British people speak much more slower than Americans. When you speak slowly, you tend to be clearer. I think elegant people never rush when they talk. Moreover, British people are more likely to emphasize on certain important points they try to explain in a sentence. Again, these are just my personal opinions. I think everyone must be happy to have the chance to express freely, and at the same time practice our English writing skill, right? We're not arguing, we're just exchanging our points of view! ^^ : cuz of the speaking pace? their way of talking? or any reasons else? : forgive me if u think i'm offensive ^^ -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 61.229.174.63 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- < 作者: obiter (繼續努力!) 看板: EngTalk 標題: Re: [Talk] Which accent? 時間: Thu Oct 7 16:35:49 2004 ※ 引述《bangbamg (this i promise you)》之銘言: : ※ 引述《alexbase (Alex)》之銘言: : : I think English accent is more casual than British, maybe just because : ^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^ : two different accents? : : the race character is different. Anyway, just a thought. I don't think it's so much the pace that they speak or anything, although they (British) do tend to speak slower than Americans (I think) I think it's more WHAT they say that makes it supposedly 'elegant'. Try and read the English version of any of Jane Austen's novels and you will see what I mean. I think the British tend to use more difficult words in general to describe the same thing, whereas Americans especially use a lot of slang. I'm not saying either is a good thing or a bad thing. Too much slang can be annoying, however, so can excessive 'elegant' language, especially if it means that something simple is explained in very difficult terms! -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 210.246.5.31 > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- < 作者: darkmiz ()=()=()=()=()=()=()=() 看板: EngTalk 標題: Re: [Talk] Which accent? 時間: Fri Oct 8 09:28:05 2004 ※ 引述《obiter (繼續努力!)》之銘言: : ※ 引述《bangbamg (this i promise you)》之銘言: : : ^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^ : : two different accents? : : well, actually, everytime when people say an accent is more gentle or casual, : : i would like to ask, "why do u think it's gentle/casual?" : : no offense, i'm just curious about that... : : why some people will have a fixed opinion that : : british accent is elegant and american one is ordinary..... : : cuz of the speaking pace? their way of talking? or any reasons else? : : forgive me if u think i'm offensive ^^ have you heard how australians speak english? that's what i call casual -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 140.112.7.59
