Spanish Word of the Day (Sunday, February 15, 2009) iniciar, verb to begin, to start Iniciar is one of the many Spanish synonyms for beginning or starting something. It is quite formal, and you will often see it in formal styles of writing, such as some newspapers. There are some nouns people often use it with. First of all los trámites, steps. Se han iniciado los trámites legales para obtener el cese de tal publicidad. (Legal steps have been taken to put a stop to such advertising.) A couple of other words it’s often used with are el proceso, process, and conversaciones, talks: el proceso que se inicia ahora (the process which is being started now) Ambos gobiernos están dispuestos a iniciar conversaciones.
