Back Stage: Renee, this film marks your second collaboration with your Down
With Love co-star Ewan McGregor, albeit in a very different kind of film.
What was it like reteaming with him?
Zellweger: Ewan and I had the best time on Down With Love, and there was such
a mutual trust between us, and I loved how he always raised the bar on the
work. But it was such a highly stylized piece that you sort of had to
manipulate the dialogue and put it into place for the scenes to work. We
would talk to each other and say, "Wouldn't it be great to go to work and
just act? To be organic and natural in our exchanges?" So we started looking
for something else to do. Then this script came along, and I read it, and in
my mind I immediately thought of him. There was one scene I read that was
such a delicate, beautiful exchange and such a vulnerable moment for his
character and so much subtext stuffed into every word and movement that I
knew he had a gift to bring that complexity mixed with incomparable honesty
to the part. So I begged him to do it. I groveled.
Noonan: It was a magic pairing. It was a gift to have Ewan agree. And the
trio of Renee, Ewan, and Emily is a magnificent bit of chemistry. After Renee
and Ewan were cast, they were the sort of pivots that made it possible to put
together a really amazing cast. There isn't a single character in the film
that's a dud; and that's rare. You usually have someone who you're a little
bit embarrassed about. But in this I found it very pleasing, all the way
through.
