The Spanish "Cantera" System - The Training of Young Professionals at Futbol
Club Barcelona

FC Barcelona has a storied international profile comparable to only the best
clubs in the world. The list of trophies is impressive. Since its founding on
29 November 1899, Barcelona has won four Cup Winners Cups, four UEFA Cups, 24
Spanish "Copa Del Rey" titles, and 16 league titles. What gets very
little attention, however, is the clubs youth development program.
One of the memorable characteristics of the Club is that it has one of the
largest stadiums in the world. With a capacity of over 98,000 fans, Camp Nou
is an experience to behold. However, what most people in the United States
don't realize, is that across from the towering soccer Mecca is a smaller and
more intimate stadium known as "El MiniEstadi," or the Mini-Stadium. Here
is where the Barcelona B Team plays their games. In the shadow of Camp Nou,
Barcelona B team members hone their skill with the hopes of being called
by the technical staff to suit up for a game for the first team. It is in
this system in which B team players strive for the top level. Nevertheless,
it doesn't begin nor end with the second team. FC Barcelona has structured
a farm system in which a 12-year-old is brought up in a competitive
menvironment to achieve the goal of being called to the next level. It is
this system which has provided much of the greatness, continuity, community
integration and support unmatched in th world. Certainly, nothing close to
anything experienced here in the United States.
