Starting at the age of 12, the club established a system of
junior teams with two teams in each level. Broken down as an "A" and "B" squad,
the players are instructed in the appropriate techniques at the appropriate
ages. What is unique about the system is that one, all coaches report directly
to the technical staff under the current leadership of Louis Van Gaal. nd
second, it is the staffs outline that determines the coaching methods employed
. It should come as no surprise, considering the coaching staff,
that starting at the first level, junior Barcelona are brought up learning
the fundamentals of the total soccer.
The technical team headed by Van Gaal covers the major areas of coaching.
Ronald Koeman, former Barcelona player, is the assistant along with Gerard
van der Lem. Koeman is also one of the head coaches of the Barcelona B squad.
Franciscus Hoek is the goalkeeper coach, and finally, Spaniard Francisco
Seirullo is the team's fitness coach. In charge of the entire youth
development program, and a direct report to Van Gaal, is Llorenc Serra Ferrer.
It is this group of five coaches, along with Ferrer, who determine the method
and direction in which the youth programs will be taken.
As is evident, the coaching methods come from the top. No better example can
be found in the dual role Ronald Koeman plays as assistant to Van Gaal, and
head coach to the B team. In this manner, junior players are coached in the
same fashion as the senior players. In an ideal world, it is these B team
players who will be able to fill the ranks in case of injury, and without
major disruption to the overall strategy for the A team.
The interposition of the coaching staff is an integral part of the continued
success of the Club. With eleven total teams, including the Barcelona A, B,
and C teams, each age group has two tiers toward a Functional Professional
Development Program. Part II is made up of 15 to 20 hand picked players. The
youngest group, or "Alevin B," are made up of 11 year olds from the
surrounding areas and play in the regional first division known as the
"Campionat de Catalunya." Although much of what is taught are basic skills,
they are introduced to more complicated aspects of the game, including
running without the ball. This is probably an area that demonstrates, above
all other skills, how woefully under coached US U11's remain. Their training
continues when they turn 12 and are brought up to the "Alevin A" squad.
