標題[外電] Ralf set to be in hospital for 'several days'

Ralf Schumacher is reportedly fine after suffering a horror crash during
the U.S. GP but is set to spend ‘several days’ in hospital recovering
from its effects.
As the German approached the opening straight at the end of his tenth lap,
Ralf’s Williams spun out of control and smashed into the wall at
approximately 190mph. The impact was horrific, sending Ralf’s wrecked FW26
spiralling down the straight before it rolled to a halt in the middle of
the track.
With Ralf motionless in the cockpit, there was an interminable period before
the safety car was summoned and marshals arrived at the stricken Williams.
In all, the safety car completed 11 laps before Ralf had been helped out of
the car and taken away in an ambulance. However, to the relief of all,
the FIA medical team were able to report that Ralf was essentially ‘fine’
- albeit suffering from dizziness, bruising to his back and concussion.
Considering the extent of the impact, Ralf’s good health was a remarkable
testament to the safety levels of the modern F1 car.
"He’s in a lot of pain but basically sound," reported Sir Frank Williams.
"Nothing’s broken but from what I understand he will be in hospital for
several days."
The team added in a statement: "He is conscious, can move everything and is
in a stable condition. The team are not yet aware of what caused the incident."
The cause of the crash was unclear, although Sir Frank defused suggestions
that Ralf had suffered a tyre failure before the crash. Just two laps earlier,
Fernando Alonso’s rear-right tyre had exploded, possibly after collecting t
he debris of a first-corner accident that retired Christian Klien,
Giorgio Pantano and Felipe Massa to retire and prompted the first appearance
of the safety car.
Ironically, Ralf’s accident effectively secured brother Michael’s victory,
although not before causing him a great deal of anxiety.
"It was the biggest concern seeing Ralf sitting there for so long. I thought
'no please, not anything bad'. They kept telling me everything was alright,
but you've heard that in the past and it has turned out like that. But as
far as my information is concerned everything is alright," Michael said.
In the wake of Ralf's accident, spotting the opportunity of taking a pit-stop
without any time punishment – an opportunity that they missed in Monaco –
Ross Brawn immediately called both Ferraris into the pits to refuel before
they remerged behind the safety car with their tanks full.
Essentially, it was a ‘free pit-stop’, but perplexingly the BARs of Jenson
Button and Takuma Sato, who had been lined up behind the Ferraris, declined
the invitation and remained on the track. With a pit-stop taking over half a
minute to complete at Indianapolis, the decision cost both BAR drivers any
chance of victory.
Three laps after the safety car returned to the pits, the cost of BAR’s
lapse was confirmed as they were demoted to outside the top ten and into a
line of traffic, with Schumi half a lap ahead on cruise control.
To add to the frustration of ‘what should have been’, Sato, the quickest
driver for most of the race, eventually finished just 22 seconds behind
Schumacher’s Ferrari.
"In retrospect we should have taken one car in with the safety car," admitted
Geoffrey Willis.
After later retiring with a technical problem for the first time this season,
Button argued that the team hadn’t expected the safety car to be on the track
for so long – a strange expectation considering the nature of Ralf’s accident.
It was just another example of Ferrari’s rivals shooting themselves in the
foot in a season during a season when the dominant Italians have rarely needed
any extra advantage.

事故的原因還不清楚,雖然Frank Williams消去了Ralf在撞擊前發生爆胎的說法。就在
兩圈之前,Alonso的右後輪爆胎,可能是因為第一個彎造成Klien,Pantano,Massa退賽
而第一次出動safety car的事故的碎片所致。
諷刺的是,Ralf的事故雖然讓哥哥Michael十分不安,卻確保了Michael的勝利。
Michael說:「最令人關切的是Ralf在那坐了那麼久。我心想『拜託,不要有什麼事』
。其他人一直告訴我沒有問題,但以前我也聽過這樣的話卻還是發生了。但就我所得的資
訊來說一切都還好。」
隨著Ralf的事故,產生了進pit而不會加罰時間的機會-一個在Monaco錯失的機會-Ross
