Canadian driver Bruno Spengler, the current DTM vice-champion, has been
mentioned as a possible Formula One contender for some time. Next season
could mark his entry into the top field of motorsport.

In his most recent column for the Radio-Canada.ca website, the 23-year-old
indicated that he is waiting for a decision to be made regarding the matter.

"I would be very happy to be in DTM next year. I will aim for the title, if I
am still in DTM," Spengler wrote. "But I've said it before, my dream is to
enter F1. I hope to receive news during the month of November."

Since he has strong links with Mercedes, Spengler is being considered by some
as a potential surprise candidate for the McLaren seat left available
following Fernando Alonso's departure.

Nico Rosberg, Heikki Kovalainen and Adrian Sutil are the three names most
mentioned as serious contenders for the next silver arrow, yet according to
comments reported in a french-language AFP release, Mercedes Sport boss
Norbert Haug added to the speculation.

"Of course, we have a list with a few names on it, but there aren't many,"
said Haug. "Certain drivers, of whom there are many rumours at the moment, do
not appear on that list.
However, it could be that there is someone whose name has not yet been
mentioned."

Bruno Spengler, who would be the only North American driver in Formula One
and speaks fluent English, German and French, would fall into that category.

His name had been mentioned in the past for a position with the Prodrive
team, but since that project seems to be heading for a standstill regarding
the 2008 season, Spengler must look elsewhere to secure a seat in F1. A
nomination as test driver could be an option with many teams, parallel to a
further DTM season.

A McLaren-Mercedes spokeswoman, when contacted by F1-Live.com to comment on
Spengler's possible inclusion on the short list, replied: "We will announce
any additions to our line-up in due course."
