The Formula One Teams' Association (FOTA) has requested an immediate meeting
with the sport's governing body, the FIA, regarding clarification and
possible modification towards 2010's budget cap, which would see teams
limited to spending no more than £40 million per year, with a small number
of exceptions.
Having announced the changes in Paris last week, the FIA received a request
from FOTA on Wednesday after the association's meeting at Heathrow, which
also included discussions on the latest version of the Concorde Agreement.
The governing body's initiatives to impose the cap include attracting new
teams to the grid next year, as well as helping to ensure the survival of
current competitors.
"FOTA held a positive and constructive meeting and agreed to continue working
together in a methodical manner for the definition of further cost reduction
in 2010 and 2011, progressing along the path begun in 2008," an official FOTA
statement read. "FOTA has concerns with the decisions taken at the last WMSC
(FIA World Motor Sport Council) meeting regarding the 2010 regulations and
therefore asks to begin urgent consultations with the FIA."
FOTA's main worry relates to the possibility of a two-tier championship, as
teams would be presented with the options of either accepting the budget cap
and being rewarded with more technical freedom, or declining the budget cap
and continuing to follow current technical rules.
