How do you judge a rookie?
http://ppt.cc/F7(6
Rookies are probably an overlooked aspect of F1. Little attention is given to
the variability of first year performances and to questions about rookie
talent. I started thinking a bit more about it when today I heard Piquet Snr.
claim that his son beat Fernando in Spain.
In essence, his argument made sense. Nelsinho was a tenth off of Fernando in
qualifying in an inferior car (Fernando has all of the updates). Piquet Snr.
says the updated car goes two-tenths faster, however one can assume the
validity of the argument is questionable.
But back to the main point- what makes a rookie successful and what makes him
fail? How come Lewis Hamilton can be so desperately close to winning the
title in his debut season when his GP2 rival can't even out-qualify his
team-mate?
-----
One of the biggest reasons why rookies fail is lack of modesty, I think we
can all agree. Lewis did not say he would beat Fernando in the '07 pre-season
but rather would try to learn from him. Nelsinho, on the other hand, had his
father trumpeting that his son would beat Fernando in the first practice
while Fittipaldi kept issuing Fernando warnings about his countryman. All of
this speculation had to give Nelsinho some confidence that quickly evaporated
come Albert Park. Buemi this year has been extremely quiet, as if he was
hoping to be mistaken for Vettel/Webber/Bourdais on the track. Nevertheless,
his performances have easily put Bourdais in the shade and he seems to be a
great replacement for Vettel. His selection over Bruno Senna makes sense in
retrospect, although Senna out-shined Buemi in GP2. Senna on the other hand
had a bit of over-confidence, which Berger probably was wary of. Nelsinho
will never be able to match Fernando if his father keeps expectations at
where they are now. Was he faster than Fernando in Spain? Possibly, Catalunya
being Nelsinho's favorite track. A quiet pat on the back would have been more
useful than a childish "he was faster" chirp to the media.
But it's not like modesty is the only trait needed. Nakajima is probably the
least arrogant rookie in the sport and yet has been unimpressive. He seemed
fine last year but this year has been largely ineffective. True, the Williams
isn't that great, but his performance is still lacking.
Buemi, Vettel, and Lewis all had an advantage in that they are clever racers,
Lewis especially. Lewis has not yet retired in a race outside of the pit-lane
and apart from a few glitches last year never has had a race-ending first
lap. Buemi tends to be a thoughtful racer. Last year, he won in Hungary by
waiting for the race leader to slip on his used tries rather than try a rash
overtaking move. Vettel has made a few howlers, but on a good day won't let
the ball drop. I think the mark of a truly great racer is a lack of crashing.
Think of the last Fernando had a big race shunt into the wall- I think that
would be Japan '07 (although he had semi-crashes afterwards). Lewis has never
crashed in the actual race. A tad of Schumacher-esque intelligence is needed
in rookies in lower class cars if they want to take some points.
Some people say rookies need time. I think that holds true for about half of
them. That notion has been a bit overlooked recently, as F1 has enjoyed some
"quick and easy" recipe drivers like Lewis, Vettel, and Buemi. If you look at
Nelsinho and Kazuki, they both have had their fair share of time. Felipe is
evidence of the contrary: he got better with time but struggled to do so. As
teams look harder for more easy point-scorers in rookies, time will be a less
available commodity.
But again, what rookies really need is anonymity. If they are asked to
flamboyantly prove their skills, they will fail. Lewis coped well with the
tension but painfully broke down at the finish line as he was probably
overwhelmed by the task ahead of him. He was to young and under too much
scrutiny. Compared to Vettel, who had the time to anonymously rack up some
double-digit finishes before really getting his game going, one can clearly
see why camera flashes blind F1 rookies whether their visor is on or not.
But with 26 drivers on the grid next year, we can expect as lot more rookies.
It will be interesting to see how they will each fare. I think Senna will be
a slight disappointment while Di Grassi, if he takes Piquet's spot, will be
an unpleasant surprise for Fernando. Grosjean would probably fare better than
Nelsinho but Fernando should still outclass him easily. But I guess the only
way to know is to "wait and see..."

感覺這個記者還滿主觀的,不過他說得有些東西也有點道理
像是身為菜鳥不夠謙虛,當然多少會招來一些"比較負面的東西"
不過用 wait and see當結尾很好笑XD
