Heidfeld hails 'super' BMW start

Nick Heidfeld hailed BMW Sauber start to the season as “super” after
finishing a comfortable fourth in Sunday’s Australian Grand Prix.

The Hinwil-based squad had been widely expected to run towards the front of
the field in Melbourne this weekend after making the most progress of any
team during the winter and so it proved with the team only behind Ferrari and
McLaren on pace in the race.

After moving up from third to second with a pass on Fernando Alonso at the
start, Heidfeld slipped back to fifth behind team-mate Robert Kubica, after
running a shorter first stint than most, before eventually coming home a
strong fourth – a result he feels is testament to BMW’s work over the
winter.

“I had a very good start, which was an even better one than Kimi [Raikkonen]
and managed to pass Fernando,” he said.

“Of course I hoped to stay in front of him, but realistically I knew the
McLarens were quicker than us.

“Thinking about how happy we are, you should not forget where we came from
as we started last season eighth in the constructors’ championship.

“Our pace is really good and fourth is a super start to the season.”

The German was the only driver to start on the softer option Bridgestone tyre
and admits such a strategy did have its drawbacks, although he was delighted
with the car’s performance during the race.

“My tyre strategy to take the softer ones first was riskier,” he said.

“I knew after the first stop there was the danger of getting stuck in
traffic, and this is what happened, but I took the risk anyway.

“The race was a lot of fun, but in the final laps I was a bit lonely.
Mechanically my car was perfect.”

Meanwhile Kubica would have joined his team-mate in taking a large haul of
points from the 2007 opener had his F1.07 not suffered a gearbox problem on
lap 36.

The Pole, who still managed to set the fourth fastest lap at Albert Park, was
running just ahead of Heidfeld in fourth when he retired and is disappointed
he couldn’t fully exploit what he thought was a strong strategy.

“It [gearbox] was getting worse and worse after the beginning of the race
and the suddenly I was stuck in fifth gear and that was the end of the race,”
 he told ITV Sport reporter Louise Goodman.

“It was going really good, I think my strategy was really good.

“The last stint would have been very short so I would have been quick at the
end of the race.

“But I was able to do the same lap times as Nick and was much heavier so it
was good performance but the result [reward] is at the end.”
