STR's almost-P8 sparks controversy Monday April 03 2006 Following STR's almost points-scoring finish in Sunday's Australian GP, rival teams Midland and Super Aguri have written to the FIA protesting the team's use of V10 engines. Last season, while still racing under the Minardi name, the FIA granted the team permission to use restricted V10 engines in 2006 despite a new regulation implimenting the use of 2.4 litre V8s. The reason for exception was Minardi's ongoing financial struggles. However, the team was subsequently bought by Austrian energy drink giant, Red Bull, which nullified their financial situation, prompting some teams to question whether Scuderia Toro Rosso, as the outfit is now known, had been handed an engine advantage. Those cries grew louder after Sunday's Australian GP, which Scott Speed finished in eighth place, resulting in both Midland and Super Aguri writing to the FIA demanding that STR be deemed ineligible to score Constructors' Championship points. well as its identity, the other midfield teams believe that the rule is redundant. "We are trying to protect our investment," Super Aguri team manager Daniele Audetto told autosport.com. "We think that it was an unfair situation when Red Bull bought Minardi, because I understand they gave this authorisation to use the V10 because otherwise Paul Stoddart was out of business. "That was the reason and the fact that Red Bull is now owning Toro Rosso, they have not only the money to buy a V8 but they could buy Cosworth if they want. "I think it is unlikely that the FIA will accept our request because it is very difficult to change during the year the regulations, but at least we made a point." However, STR team boss Franz Tost disagrees. "The FIA made this regulation, all the other teams signed and they agreed to this," he said. "If they think that the increase in performance from Toro Rosso is only because of the engine then they are a little bit wrong, I would say." Even Michael Schumacher, who was unceremoniously passed by Vitantonio Liuzzi in Australia, disagrees with Audetto. "I don't think Toro Rosso had an advantage from the V10, I think that was down to our poor performance at that stage," he said. http://www.planet-f1.com/News/Story_Page/0,15909,3210_3213_1131749,00.html
