Massa forced Renault to change strategy

  Renault engineering director and chief strategist Pat Symonds revealed
that after Fernando Alonso failed to get past Felipe Massa at the start
of the French Grand Prix the team took a call to switch Alonso from a
three-stop strategy to a two stop. It proved the deciding factor in getting
the Spaniard up to second by the end of the race and limiting the damage
Schumacher's win did to his championship lead.

  "We knew if we didn't get past Massa we'd be in a corner strategically
and then once we didn't get past him at the start we had to focus on making
sure we got second," Symonds revealed. "Fernando had quite a few traffic
problems but I don't think in the end it made a big difference to the
outcome."

  "We had the strategy quite open to whether we'd go for a two or a three
and if we'd got past Massa at the start we'd probably have done a three
stop but when we didn't we had to go for a two stop," he added.
