BMW Sauber have confirmed that Markus Duesmann has been appointed head of
Powertrain Formula One. The German, who previously worked for Mercedes-Benz,
will replace Heinz Paschen, who is leaving the company by mutual consent.
Duesmann, 37, will start working for the team on January 1st 2007. He will
report directly to BMW Motorsport director Mario Theissen and work alongside
BMW Sauber’s technical director, Willy Rampf.
According to BMW Sauber, Duesmann instigated the move himself. “He has
approached BMW, because he was looking for a new challenge,” commented
Theissen. “His ideas for the way of working and leading a team match our
point of view. We are convinced Markus Duesmann is the right person to fill
this key position. His experience will aid us to continue the building
process for one team based in two locations, in Munich and Hinwil.”
Before joining the team, Duesmann was head of development at Mercedes-Benz
High Performance Engines and based in Britain. He had already worked at
Merecdes-Benz for four years after completing his mechanical engineering
degree, before spending eight years at FEV Motorentechnik in Aachen.
“The BMW Sauber F1 Team is undergoing a development phase and this means a
great challenge,” said Duesmann. “As head of Powertrain F1 my task lies not
only in technology, but also in the design of structures and processes as
well as in the close co-operation between the two factories. I want to put
all my experience into this project and support the team on its way up.”
BMW Sauber head into this weekend’s French Grand Prix lying fifth in the
constructors' championship standing with 19 points.
