Japanese Formula Nippon driver Sakon Yamamoto will join the Super Aguri Formula One team as their back-up third driver at the British Grand Prix this weekend replacing fellow countryman Yuji Ide. Aguri Suzuki's team made the move following the decision last month by the FIA to revoke Ide's licence for his poor performance. He was dropped over concerns he was simply not fast enough to race in F1 and following a serious crash on the first lap of the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola in April when he rammed into the back of Midland driver Christian Albers. Ide was by far the slowest man on the grid for the three races he competed in. "The Super Aguri F1 Team has been competing with only drivers Takuma Sato and Franck Montagny since the European Grand Prix," the all-Japanese team said on the team's website. "We reached an agreement that Sakon Yamamoto will join us as a third driver at the British Grand Prix." "Sakon has driven at the Japanese Grand Prix last year (free practice for Toyota), so he's no problem to be given a licence, but we are trying to confirm about it with the FIA not to repeat Ide's example," it added. Yamamoto, 23, made his Japanese F3 debut in 2001 before going on to compete in the German F3 and the European F3. His highest finish in Formula Nippon this season was as runner up in the eighth race at Motegi. Yamamoto left Japan for Britain on Tuesday. He was expected to be Super Aguri's back-up driver at the Canadian and US Grand Prix as well, but could make his F1 debut at the French Grand Prix and become the youngest ever Japanese F1 driver. The Super Aguri team joined the 2006 F1 championship in the first race of the season in Bahrain. With Japanese drivers, Honda engines, Bridgestone tyres and Japanese sponsors, it is the first all-Japanese team in a still largely Western sport. Suzuki became the first Asian to stand on the F1 podium in 1990 when he finished third at the Japanese Grand Prix.
