April: D for Development
From: FIFA
The kick-off of two major projects, Com-Unity and Futuro III, in April
underlined FIFA’s continued commitment to developing the game throughout the
world. Goal hit new targets in its exhaustive programme, while continental
qualifiers for a number of FIFA competitions later in the year, were finishing
thick and fast.
Botswana hosted the first project aimed at improving communication among
football stakeholders in a region, while Malaysia staged the inaugural Futuro
III with the objective of helping associations better manage administration,
coaching, refereeing and medicine.
FIFA’s ongoing Goal Programme was not to be outdone however and nations from
Albania to Afghanistan to the Cook Islands all reaped from its harvest. In
another part of the world, football was crossing further boundaries as blind
teams gathered for a championship in Buenos Aires.
Asia was the place though where most business was done in tournament qualifying
Iran scored their sixth consecutive continental futsal title and a place in
Chinese Taipei, while China bounced back from FIFA Women’s World Cup
disappointment last year to champion Asia and walk the road to Athens.
FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking
After 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in some regions and a host of friendlies,
there was still no change among the top 3, but the gap between Mexico in 4th
and Cameroon in 13th narrowed considerably as teams clustered behind Brazil,
France and Spain. Elsewhere Iran reached their best ever position of 17th while
Venezuela inched inside the top 50.
2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™
There were no qualifying fixtures played in April. Oceania and Europe were
the only confederations still to get going.
