Kuerten breaks new ground Gustavo Kuerten reached the third round for the first time in eight tries after a controversial win over Ivan Ljubicic. The former world number one led by two sets to one when Ljubicic was upset by a line call and totally lost his form. After falling 4-0 down in the fourth set, Ljubicic delayed proceedings with an injury time-out, and Kuerten had to re-focus to win 7-5 6-7 (5/7) 6-4 6-3. Kuerten will face Jerome Golmard or the Thai 13th seed Paradorn Srichaphan in the next round. Ninth seed Sebastien Grosjean continued his steady progress with a 6-4 6-3 6-2 win over Jan-Michael Gambill. Grosjean will now play the in-form Dominik Hrbaty, who beat Argentina's Gaston Gaudio 6-1 7-5 6-0. Hrbaty has already won two tournaments in 2004 and has now won 12 straight matches. Robin Soderling, conqueror of sixth seed Rainer Schuettler in round one, saw his run come to an end at the hands of Nicolas Escude. Escude had six months off the tour after Wimbledon last year through injury, but returned to win a tournament two weeks ago. He beat Soderling 6-3 7-6 (7/4) 6-4 and could be a dangerous floater in the top half of the draw. Also through is veteran Todd Martin, who beat Ivo Karlovic in three tie-break sets, and James Blake, who beat Nicolas Lapentti. Sixteenth seed Sjeng Schalken needed four sets to beat David Ferrer, eventually winning 6-3 6-2 5-7 6-1. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/tennis/australian_open_2004/3415465.stm -- monkey of the year. ▕猴▏ -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 218.32.136.105
