Defending Champs To Meet Top Seeds in Doubles Final
Defending champions Michael Llodra and Fabrice Santoro will play top
seeds Bob and Mike Bryan (pictured) in the final of the Australian Open
doubles. Fifth seeded Llodra and Santoro advanced to their third consecutive
Australian Open final with a 6-2, 7-5 win over ninth seeds Gaston Etlis and
Martin Rodriguez. The Bryan twins avenged their loss in the Sydney final to
Jonas Bjorkman and Todd Woodbridge, ending the pair's 16-match winning streak
at Grand Slam level with an emphatic 6-1, 6-2 win.
Llodra and Santoro won their first Grand Slam title in Melbourne last year, av
enging their loss to Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor in the 2002 final.
Surprisingly, the Frenchmen's Australian crown was their lone title of the
2003 season.
Llodra and Santoro have dropped just one set en route to the final -- 6-4,
4-6, 7-5 win over Juan Ignacio Chela and Oscar Hernandez in the third round.
Earlier this week it was announced the Santoro had been dumped from France's
Davis Cup team for next week's first-round Tie.
The Bryans won their first Grand Slam title last year at Roland Garros and,
like Llodra/Santoro, will play for their second major title in the Melbourne
Park final. After early scares in the tournament the Bryans have produced
some of their best tennis in the quarters and semis, dropping just three
games to Sa/Saretta and Bjorkman/Woodbridge respectively.
But in the second round the Bryans needed to survive a second-set tie-break
to stay alive against Garcia/Prieto and in the third round they were taken
to a third-set tie-break against Koenig/Pala.
The Bryans last year won five titles from eight finals. They won the Tennis
Masters Cup Doubles title in Houston with a 5-0 record and claimed the
year-end World No. 1 team title. Both players also individually ranked
No. 1 during the year.
