Aussie pair walk into doubles final
Saturday, January 31, 2004
Aussies David Jeflea (Green Valley, NSW) and David Galic (Frankston, VIC)
today moved into the boys' doubles final after Gael Monfils, successful in
his singles semifinal earlier in the day, decided to withdraw from the
doubles semi due to a minor injury. Monfils believes he will be fine to
continue his singles campaign tomorrow, but did not want to jeopardise that
chance by playing a tough doubles match today.
Jeflea and Galic, both seventeen, have played as a team on only a few
occasions, the first when they represented Australia, and went on to
win the IBM Business Consulting Services Australasian Challenge in Sydney
in February.
Tomorrow they meet top seeds, Americans Brendan Evans and Scott Oudsema
who today defeated Novak Djokovic (Serbia & Montenegro) and Scoville
Jenkins (USA) 6-3 7-5. Oudsema, with compatriot Phillip Simmonds, won
the doubles title last year, and will be keen to defend his title.
In boys' singles it is an all-French affair, with No. 8 seed Monfils meeting
his doubles partner, seventh seed Josselyn Ouanna, across the net. This will
be the third time the pair has met, with Monfils leading two to one.
In the girls' singles today No. 3 seed Nicole Vaidisova (Czech Republic)
upset top seed Jarmila Gajdosova (Slovakia) 7-5 6-3. Vaidisova will meet
13th seed, Israel's Shahar Peer, who had to work hard today to dispose of
Swiss Timea Bacsinszky 76(7) 7-5. They have met just twice before, with
Peer coming out on top each time.
And in doubles, top seeds Vaidisova and Veronika Chvojkova (Czech Republic)
meet No. 2 pair, China's Sheng-Nan Sun and Taipei's Yung Jan Chan.
