Men's No.9 seed Andy Murray has been sent tumbling out of Australian
Open 2008 by Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Murray, who had kicked off his year with a victory in the Qatar Open
in Doha, never recovered after the athletic Tsonga took the early
initiative, breaking Murray late in the first set and then once in
the second to take a 2-0 lead. The 20-year-old powered back into
contention after taking the third set 6-0, and had a chance with
a break point early in the fourth.
But Tsonga toughed it out, forcing Murray into a key error in the
tie breaker and taking the match 7-5 6-4 0-6 7-6(5) to set up a
clash with either Sam Warburg or Juan Pablo Brzezicki.
The 22-year-old Frenchman caught Murray napping, winning 71 per
cent of points on his first serve in the opening set and coming
to the net on 37 occasions. After an early exchange of breaks, he
secured the important one late on to take charge.
The second set evolved in a similar pattern, with Tsonga tough to
break and putting pressure on Murray by coming to the net. He got
the only break and took a stranglehold on the match.
But Murray rallied to completely dominate the third set, confining
his opponent to just four points on his own serve for the set, and
four points on Murray's serve. Murray then held a break-point early
in the fourth, but the luck fell Tsonga's way. He was able to get
the set to a tie-breaker and create a match point and a wild forehand
handed the win to Tsonga.
