Every year, the Australian Open dishes up a few surprises. And this year
is no exception.
Players surge from anonymity to be household names among the fans,
delighting the crowds with a meteoric rise through the tournament.
In recent times, it's hard to forget the run of Marcos Baghdatis through
the 2005 tournament, while last year saw the arrival of Fernando Gonzalez
on the big stage.
If we wind back the clock to 1997, a guy by the name of Carlos Moya first
made his mark here in Melbourne. And he still continues to be a fan
favourite today.
So who could we expect to catapult themselves into the limelight at
this year's tournament?
Let's take a look at some of the candidates.
Alize Cornet - there has been an impressive number of Frenchman who
have made their mark at this year's Australian Open. She cruised
through her first round match, but now faces a big test in the form
of No.9 seed Daniela Hantuchova. If she can somehow overcome that
hurdle, it's safe to say that people will be talking about a new
kid on the block. Keep an eye out for this girl.
Pauline Parmentier - another player from France who is on the rise.
Only 21, Parmentier faces a stern second round test against Agnieszka
Radwanska. And if she gets past that, she gets to go head-to-head with
Svetlana Kuznetsova. Let's just say that the Parmentier Paratroopers
may well be out and about at Melbourne Park if she is around in the
fourth round. Whatever happens here, look out for her to establish
herself as one of the game's rising stars in 2008.
