Kid Tsonga to shock world
By Chip Le Grand
January 26, 2008
ROY EMERSON came to the Australian Open from his California home expecting
to see Roger Federer better his mark of 12 Grand Slam singles titles.
What he did see, on Rod Laver Arena two nights ago, was something else
altogether.
Emerson is still having trouble getting his mouth around the name. But
when it comes to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga's talent on a tennis court, one of
Australia's best ever players has no doubts.
Jo-Wilfried
Tsonga
"We witnessed a star in the making," Emerson said. "I haven't seen anyone
overpower a player like Nadal like that. I can't remember a match played
for three sets at that high calibre of tennis."
In another grand slam country halfway around the world, Tsonga's spectacular
arrival is being hailed as a sporting miracle.
Yannick Noah, the last Frenchman to win a major title, described his
straight-sets mauling of world No.2 Rafael Nadal as "beautiful".
Nicolas Escude, the last Frenchman to play a match of such significance
at Melbourne Park, when he anchored France's 2001 Davis Cup triumph, said
Tsonga had "walked on water".
Davis
"He literally made holes in the court," Escude told France's sports
newspaper L'Equipe. "It is one of the most enormous things I have ever
seen. He made Nadal look like a little boy with no clue."
L'Equipe dedicated four pages to Tsonga's win over Nadal, including a
cartoon depicting the 22-year-old as Muhammad Ali in his famous pose
standing astride a KO'd Sonny Liston. Due to his striking resemblance
to a young Cassius Clay, Tsonga answers to "Ali" by his French teammates.
He is also known as Big Jo and "le mome" which translates as "the kid".
Ali
還有Big Jo和le mome,後者的意思是「the kid」。
French television station TF1 has been in frantic negotiations to secure
the rights to show Tsonga's final live on Sunday morning, French time.
If the network is successful, it will be the first time any tennis outside
of Roland Garros has been shown on French free-to-air television for years.
Despite being in the middle of its domestic football season, France has
fallen deeply, madly in love with its brightest new star. The only complaint
Tsonga's father, Didier, had was constant media calls prevented him from
contacting his son before the Nadal match. The only person not surprised
by all the fuss is Eric Winogradsky, Tsonga's coach for the past five years.
Nadal
Tsonga
While Tsonga winning the Australian Open would indeed "shock the world" as
Ali promised to do, Winogradsky, a former tour professional, says Tsonga's
overnight success has been years in the making.
Winogradsky
"We shouldn't forget that to be a complete player, able to play from the
baseline and able to play at the net, it takes a lot more time," Winogradsky
explained.
Winogradsky
"The process for every player needs two or three more years. I have seen him
play really good matches. Maybe not that good but close. He had good wins
before coming here over Moya, Ancic, Hewitt two times and Gasquet.
"By the quarter-finals or the time you play a seeded player, you have to
play really consistently from the beginning to the end of the match. That
is what he could not do until recently.
"That is what he did in the last two matches."
Tsonga was more than consistent against Mikail Youzhny, his quarter-final
opponent, and Nadal on Thursday night. From where Emerson was sitting, he
was flawless.
Emerson
"If he can produce that tennis and play that high a standard for three sets
without a blemish - it was incredible," Emerson said. "In the second and
third sets poor Nadal tried everything and the kid just teed off.
"He was loose as a goose and every shot that he tried came off. He came
to the net and he played those stop-volleys that were not only perfect,
they barely cleared the net. It was an eye-opener."
For Winogradsky, it was merely a case of Tsonga doing exactly what the
pair had planned.
"He played the way we wanted him to play and the way I asked him to play
before the match because he knew it was the only way to win," Winogradsky
said.
"He had to go for it. He had to hit the ball hard but not always the same
way. He had to go to the net but not always the same way. That is what he
did perfectly."
The story of Tsonga's recovery from a serious back injury and dramatic
emergence at this tournament, starting with a first-round win over Andy
Murray is now well known. As for Tsonga's physical attributes - the belting
serve and forehand, deft touch at the net and ballet-like movement for a
player of such size and strength - they were all there for everyone to
see against Nadal.
Andy Murray
Nadal
Perhaps less apparent is the thought Tsonga puts into his tennis and the
broader perspective he has beyond the game. This is what has allowed Tsonga
to keep his feet on the ground at the same time his tennis world is spinning
around him. Winogradsky credits much of this to Didier Tsonga, a school
teacher who saw the worst of life growing up in the Congo and never
tolerated displays of sporting petulance from his son.
Winogradsky
"He knows about the bad and hard things in life, coming from Africa, so
it is all relative," Winogradsky said. "If Jo makes it, it will still only
be sport.
"His parents gave him a really good education with very strong values. He
knows what is important in life and because he was injured for two or
three years, he had time to think about it and realise what he has to
do to go really high. Everybody keeps saying it has happened so quick.
I say no, it has taken a long time."
The Tsonga family watched Jo's semi-final triumph at his old tennis club
in Coulaines, just outside Le Mans in western France. Cheering beside
them was Tsonga's first coach, Franck Lefray, who recalled the young
Tsonga's willingness to punish himself through long, gruelling practice
sessions.
Tsonga
"The Jo that I see now is the Jo I have always known," Lefray said. "When
Jo was young, he always wanted to train. Even when Jo was tired he would
not stop."
