Hats off to Agassi
Cool under pressure Andre Agassi bided his time until unforced errors
undid Frenchman Nicolas Escude in Friday action at Melbourne Park. The
second seeded Agassi defeated Escude 6-2 3-6 6-3 6-4 to advance to the
fourth round.
“You live by the sword and die by the sword,” Agassi said afterward
of Escude's gutsy but often reckless attacking tennis. 'Scud' squandered
12 break points in the third set as the American broke the match open.
In the Last 16, Agassi faces Guillermo Coria of Argentina who defeated
Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen 7/5 6/2 6/2.
Another Frenchman came even closer to an upset when Fabrice Santoro
extended fourth seed Juan Carlos Ferrero to five sets before losing 4-6 6-3
4-6 6-2 7-5 in three and a half hours of play.
Last year's French Open finalist twice fought his way back from a set
down to seal victory. The diminutive Santoro stayed in the match despite
fifth-set cramps, consistently trying to curtail exchanges with the
serve-and-volley. He saved several match points before handing Ferrero
his ticked to the Last 16 and a meeting with up-and-coming Croat Mario
Ancic, winner over Australian qualifier Peter Luczak.
The lone Frenchman left in the draw Sebastien Grosjean easily disposed of
Ecuador’s Nicolas Lapentti 6/1 6/3 6/3.
The big upset of the day came in a marathon all-Spanish affair with Felix
Mantilla overcoming eight seed Albert Costa 3/6 6/3 4/6 6/1 6/3. A nose
well-lubrified with suntan lotion a la Pat Rafter paid off for Mantilla: he
was better at resisting the heat in this battle of clay court specialists.
