Russian No.3 seed Nikolay Davydenko has maintained his perfect record
against Fabrice Santoro, the 25-year-old ending what may prove to be
the French veteran's final Melbourne Park campaign comfortably at
Vodafone Arena.
Davydenko had won their three previous meetings without dropping a set,
two of them last year in Russia, and he eased through 7-6(1) 6-2 6-2 to
book a fourth-round clash with either fellow Russian and No.21 seed Dmitry
Tursunov or Czech No.13 seed Tomas Berdych.
Against Berdych, Davydenko boasts another unblemished record of fours wins
from as many matches, the last of them just over 12 months ago in Sydney,
while Davydenko has also beaten Tursunov once in each of the past three
years, twice in the Paris Masters.
After conceding only nine games in his first match against Argentine Sergio
Reitman and just seven in defeating Gilles Muller of Luxembourg, Davydenko
had to work a little harder against Santoro, who was contesting his 58th
Grand Slam.
But after putting up a solid fight in the first set, which he led with a
break at one point, 34-year-old Santoro was unable to maintain his challenge
a year after making the quarterfinals at Australian Open 2006 as Davydenko
raced through the next two sets.
