Tsonga stings Monaco in first round

Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga progressed into the second round of Australian
Open 2009 on Tuesday, defeating Juan Monaco of Argentina 6-4 6-4 6-0 at
Hisense Arena.
Tsonga, the Australian Open 2008 men’s singles runner-up, emerged on top in
a tight first set, securing a single break and consolidating on it to win the
set 6-4 in 40 minutes.
In the second set, Tsonga turned up the heat and cruised to a 3-0 lead,
breaking the Argentine twice.
Monaco, ranked 49 in the world, found some momentum and worked the fifth seed
hard, taking four games off Tsonga before he steadied and took a
two-sets-to-love lead.
The 23-year-old Frenchman, who withdrew from the Sydney International last
week with a back ailment, showed no signs of being injured as he demolished
Monaco to love in the third set in an impressive 22 minutes.
Tsonga will now face Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia, who prevailed 4-6 7-6(3)
7-6(7) 5-7 6-3 in a four-hour five-setter over Russian Igor Kunitsyn on
Tuesday evening.
