Tsonga stings Monaco in first round Tuesday 20 January 2009 By Vanessa Skendaris Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga progressed into the second round of Australian Open 2009 on Tuesday, defeating Juan Monaco of Argentina 6-4 6-4 6-0 at Hisense Arena. Tsonga, the Australian Open 2008 men’s singles runner-up, emerged on top in a tight first set, securing a single break and consolidating on it to win the set 6-4 in 40 minutes. In the second set, Tsonga turned up the heat and cruised to a 3-0 lead, breaking the Argentine twice. Monaco, ranked 49 in the world, found some momentum and worked the fifth seed hard, taking four games off Tsonga before he steadied and took a two-sets-to-love lead.
