An interview with Mary Pierce

Each day we’ll be doing an informal interview with one of the key figures of
the tournament. Today it’s Mary Pierce, who is hoping to stage a comeback
after a serious knee injury put her out of action in 2006.
Your most memorable victory?
It would have to be my win at Roland-Garros in 2000. The whole fortnight went
like a dream, including the final against Conchita Martinez. I also have fond
memories of my win against Steffi Graf in 1994, in the semi-finals on Centre
Court. I played a perfect match.
Your worst defeat?
Against Barbara Rittner in 1996, again at Roland-Garros. I was ahead but then
started making mistakes and the crowd on Centre Court turned against me. I
said to myself, “What’s going on? She’s German and they’re cheering her
on!” I was flabbergasted.
Favourite player?
Virginie Razzano. She’s such a nice girl. I really like her.
Least favourite player?
I’d have to say Maria Sharapova when she first started out. She never used
to say hello, never spoke to anyone. I thought it was a shame. Luckily, she's
changed and has opened up a bit.
Most underestimated player?
That’s a difficult one! Maybe Marcos Bagdathis - I love his game.
Your sporting idol?
Chris Evert.
Favourite website?
The WTA site because it keeps me connected to the tennis world and I can keep
up to date with the girls’ results. I also go on the Church Team Ministries
International site a lot to read the stories or download prayers.
Favourite film?
When I was a child I loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the 1971
version with Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka.
Your favourite CD?
Ones by Christian musicians like Don Moen or Chris Tomlin.
Favourite newspaper?
“L’Equipe” (a French sports newspaper).
Your first kiss?
I must have been about 15. The boy just came up to me and kissed me. I was so
shocked that he ran away straight afterwards!(Bursts out laughing).
