While British fans await a first male Wimbledon singles champion for the
first time since 1936, the French too, are starting to get hot under the
collar at their own lack of fanfare in the cauldron of Roland Garros.
Yannich Noah was the last native to lift the Coupe des Mousquetaires, when
he beat Sweden's Mats Wilander 20-years ago for the first time since 1946,
when countryman Marcel Bernard won.
The women, fair little better and Amelie Mauresmo, one of the favourites
for this years tournament will hope to add her name to the select group of
Nelly Landry (1946), Francoise Durr (1967) and most recently Mary Pierce
three years ago.
While France boosts a Davis Cup team, which in recent years has evoked
memories of the Four Musketeers, few have challenged Noah's individual
claim of being a Grand Slam champion.
Only two men have since hinted at claiming the tag.
Henri Leconte provided little resistence against Mats Wilander in the 1988
final losing 7-5 6-1 6-2. Since then Cedric Pioline emerged as the unlikely
force in French tennis and ended his career as a veteran of Wimbledon and US
Open finals. But he fell short on the Parisian clay posting a career-best
semi-final finish in 1998.
Sebastien Grosjean, Arnaud Clement and Nicolas Escude appear the nucleus of
21st century endeavour, but sometimes even their minds have been jaded by
the national obsession: Not individual glory, but Davis Cup tennis.
Noah inspired the French to claim the most prestigious team competition
trophy for the first time in 57 years, beating the USA in 1991.
Further wins in 1996 and 2001, including three final appearances in the
past four years and murmurs of discontent have already surfaced. Escude
threatened to leave the team at the beginning of the season, citing a
need to perform better on the individual stage, where the big money is won.
So where better than Roland Garros, where consistency and attrition is
the key to surviving the fortnight and the possibility of seven five set
matches on the energy-sapping red dirt.
Another hoping for better fortune is France's number one Grosjean who is
hoping to regain some of his 2001 season form. He has been the most
consistent performer in recent years, with two quarter-final defeats.
While other French challengers Julien Boutter, Paul-Henri Mathieu and
Fabrice Santoro, will hope to reach the second week safely enough, even
they realise their chances are limited to raising a cheer in knocking out
a big-name player early on.

說起Noah…這個法國本土法網冠軍
當年是連續拍下Wilander 與 Lendl這兩位球王(且都是法網冠軍,Lendl還是三屆盟主)
並且以一個發球上網型選手身分奪冠
真是奇蹟。
