Men's Day Two Highlight By Eric Salliot Monday, May 26, 2003 Fortune has not favored last year's surprise French package Paul-Henri Mathieu, who has drawn an unenviable first round match against an in-form Gaston Gaudio. The 44-ranked Mathieu is attempting to put an injury-ridden season behind him, but Gaudio one of the formidable Argentinean clay court contingent at this year's French Open, is standing in his path. Just getting to the second round this year it seems will be something of an exploit for the home fans' favorite. CURRENT FORM Gaston Gaudio is in the form of his life. Counting his wins in the Davis Cup and the ATP World Team Championship, he has notched up no less than 26 victories already this season. Despite all those wins he has consistently fallen at the last-but-one hurdle, losing in the semi final at Vina del Mar, Buenos Aires and Hamburg. Paul-Henri Mathieu can only dream of such levels of consistency. A shadow of his former self so far this season due to a serious groin injury, the man from Alsace has one miserly win to his name, over the Austrian Werner Eschauer. Tough first round matches against Roger Federer in Rome and rising star Rafael Nadal in Hamburg have hardly assisted him, and when Michael Chang picked the names out off the hat in Paris his run of bad luck in draws continued. 'Paulo' is not the type of guy to let such misfortune get him down though. He knows all he needs is a good win for his tennis to start flowing again, just as it did last year when he cruised past Wayne Ferreira, Fabrice Santoro and Jiri Novak before falling to Andre Agassi in a game he should have won when two sets to love up. STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES Gaudio possesses one of the most dangerous backhands on the circuit, largely thanks to his uncanny ability to switch it from a whipping cross-shot to a punishing down-the-line drive. The Argentinean's serve is nothing to write home about, but his drop shot is nicely disguised and often an outright winner. The big question mark hanging over Gaudio is his ability to handle the big-match pressure. His semi final defeats at the hands of Juan Carlos Ferrero in Monte-Carlo and compatriot Guillermo Coria at the same stage in Hamburg owed as much to his worrying loss of confidence as to his opponents' merits. Mathieu boasts a threatening first serve and powerful drives on both the forehand and the backhand. He is at his best when he is able to impose his rhythm on the match, but less happy when his opponents vary the height and speed of their returns. Weak at the net, Mathieu is in need of a win to restore his on-court peace of mind - this could be just the match he needs to kick-start his season.
