Clement賽後訪問
Q. What did Cout say on the match point? You had a
little discussion at the net.
ARNAUD CLEMENT: I don't know how he said it, but he
said, "Go to the end. Good luck." He has a nice state
of mind. That was a nice thing to say.
Q. What is the feeling being in the Round of 16 in
the French Open?
ARNAUD CLEMENT: There are two different things, two
feelings. The first one is being extraordinarily happy
because it's the first time -- it was the last Grand
Slam where I never reached that stage. It's a crucial
moment between the first and second week.
But there's a second feeling. It's not the end. I
played three solid matches in a row, that's true. I
don't know who will be my opponent in the next round.
But I am convinced that I can at least go one round
further here, one more round. I don't show my happiness
too much because for me this tournament is not finished
yet. It's wonderful to have won those three matches,
and because of that I want to do even better.
Q. We have the impression you were dominating completely
in that match on center court, physically, tactically.
Did you really feel that you were in control?
ARNAUD CLEMENT: Yes, with Remi, my coach, I had some
ideas. But he brought me some extra ideas which were
very efficient. On the court, I had no bad surprises.
Sometimes when he was hitting a backhand or forehand
against me at 1,000 kilometers an hour, it happens
sometimes. I said, "It's normal just, don't worry,
congratulations to my opponent if he's able to keep it
up for the whole match, all the better for him." I thought
that if he plays well, it's okay for him. But I had to
stay in the match. Of course, he made errors. I caused
some of those, but others were unforced errors. I was
feeling very good.
Q. You said to feel good about your game, you like to
have a big physical fight. We feel that you haven't been
tested yet physically. Is it okay for you?
ARNAUD CLEMENT: Yes and no. I didn't go beyond my means
physically, talking about endurance. Of course, there
were some rallies during those three matches which were
quite long. I had to run a lot. No, let's say that today
it was more of a trap because he was not always into the
match. He was the one who set the rhythm in the rallies,
on the one hand by winners, on the other hand by unforced
errors. Every time I had an opportunity, I didn't want to.
Stay still and wait for his mistake. As soon as I had a
good opportunity, I was aggressive. But when I play, I
spend a lot of physical energy.
Q. Do you still have the impression you have a certain margin?
ARNAUD CLEMENT: Well, when I'm so concentrated, which was
the case during these three matches, I don't think about
that at all. Sometimes if I say to myself, "I have to make
a double break," I try to win every point, I go for it.
I don't make one break and wait for the rest, no. I don't
think, even if I lose the next game on his serve, I can win
afterwards, I don't think that way. I try to do as best as I
can, everything I can take, I take.
Did I answer your question?
Q. I'm going to ask the question differently. Are there
certain parts of your game you can improve upon on clay?
ARNAUD CLEMENT: Yes, I believe so. I think on faster surfaces,
at a certain stage you can say, "I won 6-4, 6-4, it was a
perfect match." On the contrary, on clay, there are so many
more rallies, so many shots to play, you can always think,
"This one I should have done better, been more aggressive,
gone up to the net on that," thought. All around, my game
today was very solid, of course. But it's, you can always
improve. You will have to see me when I'm at 5-All, 6-All,
and I'll be really in a trap. But this didn't happen since
the beginning of the match. At that moment, I'll have to
raise my level and play well when it happens. But I'm not at
a stage where I can say that I can raise my game whenever
I want.
Q. Is the fact that you reached that level in this tournament
more important than any other tournament?
ARNAUD CLEMENT: Well, yes, today I believe that when I play
against a certain kind of player, I believe they're afraid
of me because they know I can last a long time. The fact that
I'm often in the second week, people start thinking it's not
a coincidence. But I'm not really thinking about all that when
I'm on the court. It's not very interesting.
I think eight or nine times I was in the second week. I went
to a quarterfinals once. But I love being in the semis. The
good thing is I'm in the second week now. I've never done as
well here. If I can play the quarters here, it's wonderful,
and I'll try to go further afterwards.
Q. Can you talk about your two potential opponents next round.
ARNAUD CLEMENT: What's the score? In fact, I don't care who
I'm going to play. I lost against Costa this year, and I beat
Lapentti in Hamburg. Well, Costa, when I played him in Rome,
I beat him. Even if he doesn't play a lot better than I do, he
is like a fox here in Roland Garros. It's a very important
tournament for him. In Hamburg, he proved that he's able to
do that. Here he's playing really well. In fact, I don't care
who I'm going to play. Both of them have good qualities,
physically, tennis-wise. They are playing a five-setter today,
so for me it's perfect.
Q. If you compare this match to the match against Costa in Rome,
what difference is there?
ARNAUD CLEMENT: In Rome, I played an excellent match. I don't
know if today I'm different or not. I had the opportunity of
winning the match and I let it escape me because I made mistakes.
I can't predict anything. If there's a third set, I might be up 4-1.
Anyway, in Rome it was a very good match.
Q. Last time you were in the Round of 16 in a Grand Slam, it was
last year, and you lost against Lapentti?
ARNAUD CLEMENT: It was not the US Open.
Q. I'm asking. It was Gonzalez, and Lapentti in Wimbledon. In that
match you missed an opportunity. This time how are you going to do?
ARNAUD CLEMENT: Well, last year there are two matches that
completely changed my season. There was Corretja in the French
Open and there was that five-setter loss in Wimbledon.
What was your question?
Q. What do you have to do not to lose the match?
ARNAUD CLEMENT: Well, I don't know. This time is going to be
different. I'm not the same as I was last year. On grass I was
feeling good. In Hamburg, it was the same. It's like the match
against Costa. In Wimbledon I could have won in four sets, but
I lost in five. But that was last year. Now I feel different.
You know, those guys are not bad players. They keep fighting.
Even if they're down a break, they keep on playing. Costa won
a Grand Slam. During the whole year he was among the Top 10. I
think he won six tournaments. Those players have a better career
than I have. They achieved many things. It's maybe because in
the important moments, they managed a little bit better to
control the situation. Instead of losing first or second round,
they go further. Me, I have nothing to change in my preparation.
I believe I prepared for each match properly, and the next one
will have to be prepared for properly also. There are my strong
points, the weaknesses of my opponents. When you have to save a
breakpoint, when there's a very tense moment, whenever the
preparation, you are living in the present moment. If you're not
able to do better than your opponent, well, that's it.
In very important tournaments, you have very important moments. If
you manage those moments properly, then you're among the best
players in the world.
Q. The fact that you're playing doubles with Nico, is it an
advantage for the singles?
ARNAUD CLEMENT: Yes, I think it's good. Yesterday I found something
serving in doubles. I used it today. My game at the net was better
at a certain stage. Thanks to the doubles, it's improving. It's
improving compared to the past weeks. I can go to the net more often
now thanks to the doubles. The other thing is I'm busy every day
now. One day I play singles, one day I play doubles, so I stay into
the atmosphere. I reached the semis in doubles in Australia. It's
good.
Q. The fact that you're the last French player in the draw, is
it pressure for you?
ARNAUD CLEMENT: No. I was on television with Nelson, and he asked
me the question. I said, "No, absolutely not." What I owe to the
French public is to fight on each point. When you are French, and
you have the chance of playing in such an atmosphere on that
quality of court, you have no excuse not to fight. If you are in a
difficult position, you feel the crowd behind you trying to help
you. At that moment you don't have the right not to fight. It's
easy, in fact, to fight in those situations because it's normal.
I would say, on the contrary, it's difficult to relax sometimes, too.
Well, I come in, I play my tennis. For me, it's not relevant that
I'm the last French player or not. It's just a tennis match. Even
if I'm the last Frenchman or there are 10 other Frenchmen, it doesn't
change anything for my match. The only thing is I have to stay
careful tomorrow, to stay quiet, try not to do too much. I should
not change my habits from the beginning of the tournament because
otherwise I'll be destabilized.
Q. What is your schedule tomorrow?
ARNAUD CLEMENT: Well, first I want to see when my doubles will be
played. I'm waiting for that to organize my day. For today,
it's enough.
