Martina's Doubles Hopes Fly Thursday, July 1, 2004 On No.1 Court this afternoon, Martina Navratilova and Lisa Raymond demonstrated that youth is no substitute for experience. Whilst opponents Emilie Loit and Marion Bartoli have a combined age 46, Navratilova, 47- and 30-year-old Raymond cruised to victory in their quarter final Ladies' Doubles Match, 6-2, 6-4. The match got off to a sedate start, with each competitor holding their opening service game to level the tie 2-2. However, the fourth game was a long and drawn out affair with the American duo stepping up a gear. Loit and Bartoli were forced back by the third seeds, who formed a solid wall at the net which the French pair could not break down. On the ninth deuce of the game, Navratilova and Raymond grabbed the break to lead 4-2. With Navratilova holding her service game to love, Bartoli was broken by the Americans, who grabbed the set 6-2. In a reversal of fortune it was Lisa Raymond's serve that was broken. Bartoli held as the French team fought back to a 2-0 lead in the second. The set continued with serve until Raymond and Navratilova rallied, closing out the second set as they did the first.
