Schuettler Sinks Santoro
Germany's ninth-seeded Rainer Schuettler moved impressively into the
third round of the Men's Singles today by defeating the London-based
Frenchman Fabrice Santoro in straight sets. Excluding a rain delay
late in the third set, Schuettler needed just one hour and 45 minutes
to record a 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Schuettler has enjoyed a fine year and his form on grass has carried
on from such achievements as runner-up to Andre Agassi at the Australian
Open, semi-final places at Indian Wells and Sydney and quarter-finals in
Dubai, Munich and Rome.
His greater weight of shot, notably from a bludgeoning forehand, was
always too much for the lightly-built and lighter-hitting Santoro to
cope with. Schuettler landed 71 per cent of his first serves on target,
struck three aces and was always in command.
The German number one, aged 27, broke the 48th-ranked Santoro's serve
five times. The first occasion came in the fourth game of the opening
set and gave him a 3-1 lead. Schuettler broke again to capture the set
in 34 minutes when a Santoro backhand rebounded from the tape.
The break, which gave him a 4-2 second set lead, was all Schuettler needed
to go two sets up and though Santoro removed his cap at the start of
the third set it did nothing to change his luck or the course of the
match. After Schuettler broke once more to go 4-3 ahead, light rain set
in and play was eventually suspended with Schuettler needing one more
game to wrap it up.
When play resumed after a 50-minute break, Santoro lasted just five points,
dropping serve yet again when he netted a forehand at match point.
