Second seed Kim Clijsters of Belgium was in a mood to win quickly as she defeated Virginie Razzano of France on the Centre Court to gain a place in the third round for the first time since 2001 when she went on reach the quarter-finals. Clijsters was in commanding form for most of the match but five double faults would not have pleased her as they put her into difficulties at the start of the second set and she had to dig in to restore the balance of the match. Clijsters won 6-1, 6-3, conceding one game more than when she played Razzano previously in Luxembourg last year. The match was due to be played on an outside court but was moved to the Centre Court when the original match programme finished earlier than expected. Clijsters must have welcomed the chance to play on the main stage because in four Wimbledon appearances she has been no further than the quarter-finals. This year she has been seeded to play in the final for the first time, after finishing runner-up to her fellow Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne in the French Open final. Razzano, 20, held serve only once in four attempts in the first set. Breaking serve at the start of the second offered her encouragement but Clijsters dug in after her double fault problems and regained control. Clijsters took the French girl's serve to lead 5-3 and then won through on her second match point with an unanswerable drop shot.
